Project-Based Learning (PBL) and the Authentic Learning Experiences Framework (ALEF)

Project-Based Learning (PBL) and the Authentic Learning Experience Framework (ALEF) engage school communities in learning that is deep, long-lasting, and rooted in students having a personal connection to their academic experiences.

Through PBL and the application of ALEF, students gain knowledge and skills by working longitudinally to investigate complex driving inquiries to arrive at well-researched and adaptive solutions.

Both Project-Based Learning (PBL) and the Authentic Learning Experience Framework (ALEF) are a purposeful deviation from the constrained learning experiences that have dominated decades of education. Over the last several years, the percentage of high school graduates students who find themselves at a loss in professional and collegiate settings requiring the exercise of flexible and responsive thinking has grown exponentially.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) and the Authentic Learning Experience Framework (ALEF) match the strengths of rote-memorization and test-driven models while excelling in areas where these models are insufficient. PBL and ALEF equip students and staff with strategies for enabling learners to find nuanced relativity and employ flexible thinking in spaces where they might otherwise only distinguish binary patterns. Each of the frameworks supports authentic learning through the forming of mental geographies.

By supporting school communities in implementing the PBL and ALEF processes of reflective learning, shared appraisal, and presentation, we empower participants to engage in purpose-driven learning, to employ higher cognitive functions, and to generate evidence-based theories of action. These outcomes work to foster growth, innovation and design based-thinking throughout the school community.

Grow Society has played an integral role in empowering participants to engage in project-based learning and authentic learning experiences across the world. No matter what curricula your school community may use, we can assist in ensuring the elements of PBL and ALEF are driving your students’ academic achievement and holistic growth in ways that will serve them now and in the future.
